Oral Examinations
It's a good idea to book routine dental check-ups, preferrably every six months, so your dentist can identify any potential oral health problems early and create a tailored treatment plan to address them.
During theses check-ups, your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. The check-up might also involve X-rays, an oral cancer screening, and other diagnostic tests to help ensure everything is in good condition.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can affect any area part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. During your exam, your dentist will carefully check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and gums for any signs of oral cancer, as these early indicators can be hard to detect without a professional evaluation.
Oral Health Care at Home
To maintain a healthy smile between dental appointments, make sure to brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time, and floss at least once per day.
Dental Hygiene Cleaning
During your exam, your dental hygienist will carry out a detailed cleaning to help prevent and address any possible dental problems.
This process starts with a scaler to eliminate tartar and plaque. Next, your hygienist will polish your teeth with a special coarse toothpaste to remove stains and any leftover plaque, and finish by flossing your teeth and gums.
Fluoride Treatment
If you are prone to tooth decay, your dentist may recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps fortify tooth enamel by restoring lost minerals, which can help prevent or even reverse the early signs of decay.
